Project 2- Villa Savoye Material Model

Interior and Exterior Ramp Material
The Villa Savoye is a reinforced concrete house. The walls are painted in white. In Le Coursier's opinion the white represents the simple, pure, natural. That satisfies the Modernism concept. Here I emphasis on the floor materials choices. It can be seen the floor of private areas in the house are timber. Some relatively public area inside the house are floored in tile. The terraces on the first floor and second floor are floored in concrete. The interior ramp has carpet pattern and exterior ramp from first floor to roof has built in concrete with the diamond pattern. The material in rest part of the ground floor and the rest part of the second floor is sand. These two area are designed as the extra garden area.

These pilotis lift the house off the earth and increase the access to light and air. They make the ground floor more usable, and some part of the ground floor area can become of the garden. These pilotis have a lot of functions around the house. On the two longer elevation, they are flush with the face of the facade. Here they imply the heaviness and support function. They create a floating and horizontal feelings.

Project 2-Villa Savoye Geometry Analysis Drawings

  • Draw a square, then connect the midpoints of each sides, draw a diagonal.
  • Divide the big square into 16 small squares.
  • Split out a little distance above and below the square scheme, and the distance value is determined by these two triangles. The value is 1.25m. And the side of each small square is 4.75m.

  • The width of the ramp is about half width of small square side.
  • The length of the ramp is twice the length of small square side. The width of the platform is half the width of small square side.
  • The distance between the intersection of two lines and the center point of the square scheme to be the radius to draw a circle. The circle intersects the middle lines at two points. Then extend the two points to get the shape of the ground floor.

  • To determine the position of the staircase, draw a line from upper left corner to the middle point of the line below the ramp.
  • To determine the entrance.
  • To determine the position of garage, draw a line from the upper right corner to the middle point of the line below the ramp.

  • On the ground floor, there is a clear symmetry of the square grid. However, the staircase creates a little asymmetric.
  • On the second floor, there is no exact symmetry line. But the diagonal from the Southwest to Northeast creates a sense of balance. This balance also comes from the division of the exterior and interior space.
  • The wave lines below and above the square grid seems to be the air and light. That represents the air and light movement accessing the raised structure.

Villa Savoye

Villa Savoye is a modernist villa in Poissy, in the outskirts of Paris, France. It was designed by Le Corbusier between 1928 and 1931. It was built in reinforced concrete and was designed addressing Corbusier’s “Five Points”, the basic principle in his new architectural aesthetic.
1.PILOTI (pier)
In modern architecture, pilotis are ground-level supporting columns. Beyond the support function, the piers raise the architectural volume, lighten it and free a space for circulation under the construction. These piers allow a continuity of the garden and driveway below, and allowed a sense of floating and lightness in the architectural itself as well.

2.FUNCTIONAL ROOF
The roof of Villa Savoye serves as a garden and terrace.

3.FREE FLOOR PLAN
It relieved of load-bearing walls, allowing walls to be placed freely and aesthetically needed.

4 LONG HORIZONTAL WINDOW
It provides illumination and ventilation.

5. FREELY-DESIGNED FAÇADE
The façade of the villa serves as a skin of the wall and windows.

The plan was designed carefully by Corbusier in response to the view and sunlight.

On the ground floor, there are main entrance hall, ramp and stairs, garage, chauffeur and maid’s rooms. On the first floor, there are master bedroom, son’s bedroom (faced the southeast) guest bedroom, kitchen, service terrace (which on the northeast) salon (which orientated to the northwest) and external terraces (which faced the south).

I am interested in the circulation of the house.

The approach to the house was by car. For car, it proceeded around the curve to park in the garage. And the occupants entered the house on axis into the main hall through a portico of flanking columns. The four columns in the entrance hall seemingly direct visitors up the ramp. The ramp can be seen from everywhere in the house. The ramp continues up to the first floor living area. And it continues externally from the first floor terrace up to the second floor. The ramp can be seen everywhere. However, the staircase besides the ramp, it progresses to the top story only inside the house.
